Eleventh-avenue-south.com is a Minnesota-centric GLBT blog. I try to keep it local, but national events do shape local politics and culture. And I also try to keep it GLBT-related, but issues, events, etc. often transcend sexuality and gender. Also, while this blog is GLBT-centric that does not mean I won't criticize aspects of the GLBT community and culture that I feel are unhealthy, immoral, or just plain stupid.
The name of this blog is geographically based. Eleventh Avenue South is located in South Minneapolis. Originally the I came up with the name of this blog because I wanted it to be more of an Urban Studies blog, as Urban Forestry and Urban Studies are two of my academic and career interests. I live in Minneapolis, and much of the news and commentary reflect that.
Minnesota has traditionally been a progressive state in terms of GLBT rights, but recently the fringe-right conservatives have been pushing towards a more theocratic based government. This is my attempt to push back toward equality, and keep our community informed. In addition, Minneapolis lacks any real GLBT media. We've had many failed newspapers and magazines, and we have the fashion and advertiser oriented Lavender Magazine, but there is no real GLBT 'news' in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
I'm a 27 year-old Illinois native, transplanted here with the intention of earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in Urban Studies, Forestry, and Law, Crime and Deviance. I've been lucky enough to find work doing some amazing jobs: entomology technician, research assistant on forest modeling and carbon cycle studies, and HIV prevention educator. I've also worked and volunteered extensively in the GLBT community with most GLBT nonprofits, and a good chunck of the local GLBT businesses. Additionally, I've been an advisor for several GLBT-related research projects at the University of Minnesota. Everything I've written and will write for Eleventh Avenue South is my own, and does not reflect the views of any business, organization, institution, or other entity that I am affiliated with or have been affiliated with or will be affiliated with.
