The most recent issue of Lavender Magazine, 'Minnesota's GLBT Magazine', has a lengthy interview with incumbent St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly. Mayor Kelly made national headlines last year when he endorsed the re-election of President Bush.
Interviewer, Heidi Fellner managed to ask many important questions of Randy Kelly, but not a single one about his views on same-sex marriage, or GLBT rights, or anything even resembling queer. What is the point in printing an interview in "Minnesota's GLBT Magazine" without asking anything GLBT? We already have CityPages, the Pulse, the Star-Tribune, the Pioneer Press, Skyway News, etc. to ask the questions Heidi asked...we look to the queer press to ask the queer questions, and to get the GLBT angle from a politician.
What is going on with this magazine?!
UPDATE: From Norwegianity: "You have to wonder how a Mayor who vetoed the St. Paul City Council’s resolution to oppose the removal of sexual orientation protection in state law back in 2003 is suddenly the cover story fluff piece in the biggest GLBT magazine in town."
And also an Eva Young post from way back: "Well heck, there were two metro area DFL legislators who voted to retain the sodomy law the last time the topic came up -- former Sen. and current St Paul Mayor, Randy Kelly and Sen. Dave Johnson of Bloomington."
It is truly disturbing that "Minnesota's GLBT Magazine" would have a cover story about someone who's support of the GLBT community is questionable. Maybe that's why there weren't any GLBT questions? Hmm? Hmm?

This was a very odd piece indeed. The whole thing seemed like one big puff piece for Kelly. I wonder what the backstory is here.
Plus no letters to the editor section in the magazine anymore (unless I missed it) and no where on their website or in the magazine on where to send a letter to the editor.

Dave - they probably don't have a 'letters to the editor' section because they don't have an editor ;-)

The Randy Kelly piece didn't surprise me. I know at one time, Kelly approached Stephen Rocheford about having him be on some committee or something. I wouldn't be surprised if the story was Rocheford's idea.
I have to say that the magazine has lost all focus. Sad... I used to at least enjoy reading it. Now it seems to be a waste of my time.

Lavender Magazine is a collection of advertisements, nothing more...if you are looking for a gay lawyer or a gay hairdresser, pick one up...when it comes to real news we're going to have to rely on you, andy!

Not sure why there weren't any gay questions in the interview. In Lavender there should have been.
I asked Kelly about his sodomy law support - and he said it wasn't because he supported the law, but thought repeal wouldn't pass - and so didn't want to have everyone in the legislature take a tough vote on an issue that wouldn't pass.

I also found the cover story to very questionable! I think for those who don't typically read the entire articles in Lavander automatically assume that Kelly is a GLBT Supporter. I think Lavender should rethink future articles of similarity. These tactics are very deceptive. Have the Rublicans corrupted Lavender like it has our entire Government?

sorry forgot the link. http://www.gaymsp.com

I'm sure the article was there because St. Paul Chamber of commerce promised to run some ads. Or maybe Lavender wanted a drop site at the government offices.

I have the scoop on this one... I'm a little late on posting it though... The terrible editor Steve Wall befriended Randy Kelly and set the whole thing up. There was supposed to be someone else on the cover with the Mayor. The editorial content was supposed to be different... but then Steve Wall quit... Not much a already over worked editorial staff could do but fill up some pages. It's really unfortunate... but it really had to do with an unorganized editor that left Lavender in the lurch just before it was suspected he was going to be fired.
