looking through the news, I found this line in an article about a bill in Virginia that would allow schools to prevent Gay-Straight Alliances from using their facilities. The bill, introduced by Republican Matt Lohr, was killed in committee. It seems our anti-gays have been sniffing around Virginia to get ideas:
"One family organization from Minnesota, Lohr said, contacted him about introducing similar legislation in their state, he said." [Link]

This legislation sounds very promising. Perhaps, a bit more public awareness of what GSA's are doing in our public schools could not only result in some common sense restrictions, but might spill over into a more general concern over what has befallen our public schools.
Thanks for the tip Andy!

Perhaps instead of speaking in generalizations, you could enlighten us as to just what GSAa are doing in public schools. I think they're a marvelous way for GLBT kids and their allies to organize against bullying and bigotry. You know, the kind that will undoubtedly spew from your fingertips as I receive your enlightened response.

Hmmm. Bullying and bigotry is restricted in application against homosexuals? Perhaps, but I think not.
GSA's are very simply a mechanism for the homosexual agenda to be inculcated among public school children; but of course you already knew that.
And surprise! I don't blame you or your ilk my good man; not a bit of it. You are following your nature, nothing more or less.
How could I blame you.
No, it is the responsibility of we parents to ensure that the environment we send our children to for eight hours every day is wholesome.
Clearly many of us are reaping the consequences of our own inattention, which is why I not only approve of fellows such as yourself who bring our attention to bear..I applaud it!
Again, thank you and have a wonderful day!

That's right, it's not that the kids are gay and have supportive friends in the first place, it's the fault of the public schools for indoctrinating them into this "lifestyle" and dragging their friends into the fiery pit with them. WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?
Never mind that the alternative being presented here is for gay kids to go back in the closet, pretend they're not gay and later on inflict emotional damage on themselves and whatever unfortunate spouse they end up marrying to perpetuate the lie.
Look, I know we're all fond of the decade we grew up in, but I sure don't want to see kids growing up the way I did. It took a lot of years and a handful of suicide attempts (not to mention a lot of supportive friends and a loving partner) before I figured out that the only way I am going to be happy is to be who I am, and not what some religious zealots try to impress upon me.
I applaud any school that not only tolerates but encourages an atmosphere where students can be accepted for who they are, so they can focus their energies on learning what they need in order to become who they want to be.
With any luck your children will learn this lesson no matter what kind of repressive, reactionary education you force them into. Good luck with that.
