People of Faith Rally
To Stop the Constitutional Amendment to Ban Marriage and Civil Unions
Thursday March 23rd
7:30-9:00 a.m.
State Capitol Building
75 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Blvd.
St Paul, MN 55155
Rally Day Timeline:
Coffee will be available in the Great Hall in the lower level of the Capitol beginning at 7:00 a.m. The Rally itself will take place in the Rotunda, one floor up, beginning at 8:00 a.m., and is expected to wrap up by 9:00 a.m. Plan to stop by on your way to work!
Parking Info:
We encourage people to park on the streets near the Capitol (University, Rice, Aurora, Cedar, John Ireland) -- meters should be quite available at that time, and they are probably the least expensive option (remember to bring quarters to pay for parking if you choose this option). There is a parking ramp north of the Capitol on Rice Street as well. Do not park in the Sears lot or you will be towed!
Bring A Sign:
We eagerly invite participants to bring banners and signs from your places or worship and/or wear their clerical/religious vestments. Please remember there cannot be any sticks on Capital property. If you make a sign please do not attach it to a stick. There is a fair amount of "buzz" about this event and we do expect media to be present and possibly people who are proponents of the amendment. Please remember this when making your signs or preparing other materials for the event. We encourage a respectful representation at the event and if there are any signs that are not appropriate and/or offensive you will be asked to not display them.
Some featured speakers include:
* Rabbi Aaron Brusso, a rabbi at Adath Jeshurun Congregation which is affiliated with the Conservative movement. He is chair of the Minnesota Rabbinical Association and a board member of the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition. He is married and has three children.
* Rev. Doug Donley, pastor at University Baptist Church. A straight ally who has been married for 14 years, Rev. Donley was denied ordination twice because he wouldn't say homosexuality is a sin. Along with four other religious leaders, Rev. Donley received the 2005 Breaking the Silence Award at the University of Minnesota for his work to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
* Rev. Elizabeth Macauley, of Richfield United Methodist Church. Rev. Macauley is ordained an United Methodist serving as Lead Pastor at Richfield United Methodist Church in South Minneapolis. Her husband is the Rev. Cooper Wiggen of Minnehaha UMC. In Duluth, she created the interfaith Opening Our Doors Conference and Movement which encourages communities of faith to practice full inclusion of GLBT persons.
* Ralph Wyman, of the Faith Family Fairness Alliance
* Ann DeGroot, Executive Director of OutFront Minnesota
* And more…
