F3 Preview Party

The Flaming Film Festival (F3) is coming up soon, and I intend to hit a lot of the events coming up Memorial Day Weekend (when I'm not camping). F3 has taken over much of the queer programming that the GLBT Film Festival at the U of MN used to put on, so this years F3 will be big and diverse. The F3 preview is this Saturday, and below the jump is a full list of events and films.

6th annual Flaming Film Festival 2006 Schedule of Events May 25-31st, 2006

Thursday May 25th Opening Night
7pm Suburban World Theater
All Aboard! Rosies Family Cruise (Shari Cookson, 91 min, 2005, USA) live music Ellis
Sponsored by Rainbow Families & Malinda Launert
Five hundred families from across the nation are on board a ship chartered by Rosie and Kelli O'Donnell for the first-ever cruise for gay and lesbian families. This historic event, a kind of nautical utopia, offers a world without prejudice, where love, compassion, and true family values prevail. However, when the families disembark in Nassau after a week of fun and adventure, angry protesters accost them, hurling hatred in the name of Christ. For many of the younger children, still untainted by the scars of human bigotry, these protests are a confusing and frightening initiation, while the parents and teenagers are left with a piercing reminder of their struggle for acceptance. Ever conscious that a picture paints a thousand words, Cookson interweaves multiple stories with simple visual images. The smiles on the faces of the children aboard the ship become a political statement unto themselves. This exquisitely layered, powerfully moving film forces us to examine our conscience as a nation and challenges us to imagine the possibility of a better world, David Courier (Sundance Film Festival).
Join us after the screening, as local singer/songwriter Ellis performs live.

Thursday May 25th Opening Night - 7pm Bedlam Theatre 18

Is it Really So Strange? (William E. Jones, 80 minutes, 2004, USA)
Sponsored by 89.3 The Current and Kill Rock Stars
A gay filmmaker investigates the cult of Mancunian singer Morrissey which has developed in Los Angeles. There's a whole new brand of Morrissey fans amongst the Latinos and Hispanics of LA. Fans, gay and straight, discuss what Morrissey (of The Smiths) and his music and lyrics mean to them. Desire, self-identity and devotion collide, as the complexities of the star's life, and art, are dissected by his devotees. 7pm Suburban World
Zero Degrees of Separation (Ellen Flanders, 89 minutes, 2005, USA)
If love conquers all, the couples at the center of this potent documentary have a lot of conquering to do. Based around a trip that Flanders took back to Israel, where she once lived as a child, ZERO portrays the violence in Israel/Palestine through the lens of two queer relationships. Selim is a Palestinian who navigates the labyrinthine rules governing his presence in Israel to be with his Jewish lover, Ezra. The activist Ezra takes the filmmaker on a long driving tour of oppression, getting into heated and fearless exchanges along the way with Israeli soldiers, while Selim mournfully attempts to straighten out his legal status. Meanwhile, Edit confronts her own guilt about being a part of the system that oppresses her Palestinian lover, Samira. The searing honesty of these romantic realists will quickly dispel any sentimental notions the viewer may have about love in a time of war. The mournful tone of this film is emphasized by haunting archival footage of Flanders family in the Holy Land in the 1950s, yet the message radiates hard-won hope, scraped out of the broken cement and rubble of occupation.

Short Films by Trevor Adams
Adams has definitely earned himself the role of local cult filmmaker, and specializes in double exposure 16mm films. Adams accidentally cut himself with the knife, and spread blood all over the screen. Who knows what hell show us tonight

Short Films by Jason Wade
Wade is another local auteur, and is also lead singer of the band Faggot. He performs live music with 16mm films tonight, as we screen Vasectomy (yes, and it is), and a short in which his penis is once again put through serious (self inflicted) torture.
