When asked about Gov. Tim Pawlenty's view on same-sex marriage and his own, gubernatorial candidate Mike Hatch had this to say:
"'As far as I know, we have identical positions on gay marriage. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman,' he said. But he declined to support a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage that Pawlenty backs."
That's from the Mike Hatch's campaign site.
Also, Lloydletta says: "When Mike Hatch ran against John Marty in the 1994 Democratic primary, he attacked John Marty for supporting domestic partner benefits."
It doesn't seem that the top DFL candidate for the Governer's Office is a supporter of LGBT people. The Stonewall DFL, Minnesota's LGBT Democratic caucus has not endorsed Hatch and found Becky Lourey 'acceptable." Hatch also, apparently didn't fill out the Stonewall DFL questionaire, but he did play a part in the Ashley Rukes Pride Parade with Stonewall DFL.
Contrast that with what candidate Becky Lourey has to say on her campaign website: "For me, this is not just a political issue but a deeply personal issue. One of my children is gay and in a committed relationship. I have been fighting for the civil rights of GLBT folks for over thirty years–since the early domestic partnership fights at the University of Minnesota in the early 1970s. My business provides domestic partnership benefits for our GLBT employees. Many members of my campaign staff and leadership are members of the GLBT community."
On LGBT issues, Becky Lourey seems to be the leader between Hatch and Pawlenty.
It makes me wonder why 73% of people at Twin Cities Pride picked Mike Hatch in Outfront's popular "Marble Vote."

Why did 70+% pick Hatch? Because the GLBT community has never been anything but a political pawn in the DFL eyes here. They want our votes but they don't want to do anything to help us. They take the "safe" path of just not supporting a Marriage Amendment, while none of them push for equal rights. The only major party candidate in this election who supports equal rights, in both his political life and personal life is Peter Hutchenson. If any GLBT people vote for Hatch, they are no better than a GLBT person who votes for Pawlenty.

In all fairness I should note that I am a semi-major donor to the Hutchenson campaign and volunteer for Team Minnesota, but I do so because I believe Team Minnesota is the best thing that will happen for ALL Minnesotans

I agree that the GLBT community here is very beholden to the DFL. And some DFLers are amazing, John Marty is one of those, our own Karen Clark and Scott Dibble are some more. It's a shame we don't have a system that allows 3rd parties to really get in there and do some good outreach. I think elections in MN would be quite different if we did have such a system.

Kudos for posting about this. It will be interesting to see what Stonewall does at their July meeting. Hatch's endorsement will be on the agenda. Will they endorse him even though as he himself claims, there is no difference between he and Pawlenty on gay marriage?

It's simple: Vote for Becky Lourey in September. Vote for Becky Lourey in September. Send a message to Hatch and vote for Becky Lourey in September.
