Boom! and Oddfellows to Close This Month

Northeast Minneapolis LGBT bar, Boom!, and attached restaurant, Oddfellows, will both close by month's end, according to a credible source. Oddfellows' last day will be September 10, while Boom! is expected to close by September 25.

The bar and restaurant have been in business serving the LGBT community for almost 7 years, a closing celebration is being planned for those who have enjoyed Boom! in the past.

Be sure to get one last taste of Oddfellows next week when it will be open Wednesday through Saturday. Reservations are encouraged (612-378-3188).

Damn. Boom is where I used to go to watch football when I was craving a "bucket of Rocks." Excellent tv screens and the chance to watch the two guys at the end of the bar play scrabble made for a good low-key time.

Boom! = Yawn!

So, where's a fag supposed to go drinking in that neighborhood then?

Apparently "The Bulldog" bought it. I've never been to The Bulldog (26th and Lyndale where Mud Pie was) but am told it is "gay friendly"

Dang, I'm sad to hear that it's closing. I wasn't a regular there, but I always felt comfortable. Have you heard why they're closing?

The Bulldog?

If you haven't been, go now. Where else can you get great beer and gormet bar food for a decent price? I'd totally go to whatever Boom! is becoming if the Bulldog bought it...

Damn, I just finished speaking to a couple of friends who have moved from NYC back to Minnesota and they wanted to take me there when I visit in the Fall. Was looking forward to it.

Love your blog, and am linking it to mine. Give mine a peep when you get a chance.

That's too bad. I wasn't a regular there, but I sometimes went to the HRC happy hours there.

Sorry, this is our fault. My partner and I are moving from northeast to a place in south Minneapolis. Boom couldn't possibly stay in business without us...

Sure can't understand why they are closing.
Over priced weak drink and attitude. If you're not in your 20's forget about getting good service.

We have been with Boom from the first day and will be there on their last day... Being a middle aged couple we have always found Boom inviting and friendly. The staff has always been pleasant and friendly. We will miss the neighborhood bar....

Good-riddance!

Boring, uber-snotty staff, overpriced drinks, horribly sterile and as per every other gay bar in the Twin Cities-shitty music.

Jetset should fill the void nicely.

I find it sad that BOOM is closing. I never thought it was snooty. Snooty is any bar/club in West Hollywood. I for one will miss it. I have many fond memories of the place. The gay community in Minneapolis never really supports bars, that's why there are so few (and even fewer w/o BOOM). I've heard Brass Rail and the 90s will be closing soon, not sure if that's true.

I agree with Gary & Chuck above... My partner and I are in our 30s and it was a great bar to hang out at without the flash and drama of many the other bars. I always found the staff to be great. I'll miss it.

I'll miss it - I went twice a week for bar food after the gym and always ran into people I knew. Friendly service, and I'm in my 40s so perceived poor service has nothing to do with age. Jetset is the true bore. Posing & too loud to talk = useless.

When Boom opened in the mid 90s it was truly a different bar in the Gay scene. By being a clean safe open space it single handily terminated the image of the seedy gay bar in this area. Large floor to ceiling windows? On a corner to boot? Truly different for this area. It was the place to be during that time period. Every weekend you could go to packed crowds. But Boom suffered from lack of attention by its owners. The bar hasn’t gone under any real changes since it opened and you can see the neglect in the last couple of years. Whenever I thought of Boom - I thought of the repetitive music and the place emptying out promptly at 11:30pm. Personally I don’t see how you can screw up running a bar in the resurgent Northeast Minneapolis area but they did it.

As for Oddfellows - the word “inconsistent” comes to mine. The menu was uninspired and the food of dubious quality. It was never a place that was the top of anyone’s list for dinner. The four times I’ve had dinner there it was always with a group of people who thought supporting gay owned businesses was important. I harbor no such thoughts. Can’t provide a service that enough people need or use? You deserve to go out of business.

So - goodbye Boom. Thanks for changing the landscape in the Cities but it appears you couldn’t keep up.

I have to say, we went to Oddfellows last night and were sorely disappointed. The vegetables were obviously bought frozen and already cut, as was my meal--and I think the chicken lorraine may have been a pot pie that someone split open and scooped into a ramekin. My partner's meal wasn't bad, but at $19 it was overpriced by $10, at least.

I thought they would have enough pride in themselves to make the last night memorable...in a GOOD way. I hope the bar doesn't go out on the same sour note at the end of the month!

Of the few gay bars we have in the Twin Cities, Boom was the favorite for myself and friends. It was a welcome change from the dark and seedy look of some of our other venues. Boom was the best in town and could have made it if the owner had listened to the vision of their staff and patrons. If they had closed the costly restaurant and put in a dance floor, coffee shop, or piano bar, they would have drawn a broader crowd, kept patrons for longer periods, and kept the drinks flowing. Boom was the best, the staff was incredible and will all be missed. Many of us truly hope that some investors will open a similar venue, with a more expansive vision, in the VERY near future.

Boom sucked anyways - who cares..
