A mother, Gena Bounds, went on KSTP channel 5 last night to protest a teacher reading the book, Asha's Mums, to the 2nd garde class at the Inter District Downtown School. The school has supported reading the book that tells about a little girl with two mothers. Rainbow Families pointed out that Hennepin County has one of the largest concentrations of same-sex households with children in the country. You can view the whole story here.

Good for Gena!
Hopefully this publicity will prompt more parents to find out the truth of what their children are being taught in twin cities public schools.
Ms. Bounds doesn't come across as someone who is going to have her children's values be dictated to her, I'm betting we haven't heard the last of this....and it's about time.

I think most parents won't care that children are being taught about different kinds of families. Honestly, if they don't like gays and lesbians, they are welcome to teach their children that. But schools should not ignore the fact that gay and lesbian families exist, especially at a school in inner city Minneapolis where it's likely there are a few kids with two moms or two dads.

I don't see the problem of with the school doing so, but the teaching should be optional. Imagine if someone tried reading a bible story in school. While this may be an extreme hypothetical situation I'm really for the diversity of idea's, not compelled learning. I believe the bible, the Kuran, the Hagadavagita (or however you spell that book's name) and Tao should all find themselves in a class just as well as Asha's Mum's. I think everyone is for tolerance of idea's, but what about tolerance of opposing idea's? That's the problem.
School's should be filled with opposing idea's and open discussion. That's where thought flourishes.

as an adendum:
I don't think parents find anything wrong with the idea that these types of families exist, what they are uncomfortable with is the fact that books like those teach children to accept and condone such lifestyles, which on the surface sounds great, but is in opposition to the parents idea's of how Children should be. To some it's propaganda, to other's it's a lesson in acceptance.
Either way you are right, it shouldn't be an ignored topic.

As a student of IDDS,
I don't think that it's fair to be broadcasting this kind of thing on the news. In return for putting our school's name next to a bunch of anti-gay homo-phobes, we are getting a bad name. Our school is based on diversity, in fact, it is our mission statement. If we do not address the fact that there are gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders, at a somewhat early age, then we are just breeding more ignorant, redneack, retards, that will badger, harass and ruin other peoples lives. Who will then, grow up, and become older retards who now have the power to vote, and keep rights away from many deserving people. People like george bush. SO STOP BEING SO SCARED OF THE TRUTH!! ITS OUT THERE, AND WERE EVERYWHERE! get used to it ma'm (aka ms.Gena Bounds)
signed,
a concerned student
