A teacher at the Interdistrict Downtown School in Minneapolis came out last month, and sparked a protest by parents who don't want their children being taught that gay people exist.
Parents by law do have the right to review curriculum and request their children be excused from parts of it. FeLicia McCorvey Preyer, one of the protesters and the mother of seven children at the school, said she met with Sage in August and, "I mentioned that I did not want my child hearing this information" about gay issues.
The protest was counterprotested by a student at the school who said the parents were 'hatemongers'. The issue also caused a student at IDDS to leave a comment with my site, saying:
As a student of IDDS, I don't think that it's fair to be broadcasting this kind of thing on the news. In return for putting our school's name next to a bunch of anti-gay homo-phobes, we are getting a bad name. Our school is based on diversity, in fact, it is our mission statement. If we do not address the fact that there are gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders, at a somewhat early age, then we are just breeding more ignorant [people] that will badger, harass and ruin other peoples lives. Who will then, grow up, and become older [and] who now have the power to vote, and keep rights away from many deserving people. People like george bush. SO STOP BEING SO SCARED OF THE TRUTH!! ITS OUT THERE, AND WERE EVERYWHERE! get used to it ma'm (aka ms.Gena Bounds)
signed, a concerned student
Gena Bounds is the parent who is organizing other parents against the gay teacher. And the student is correct, the school's mission statement is "a partnership of diversity, community, and technology."

This could well be the beginning of the end for GLSEN's DFL supported attack on our kids.
They've picked the wrong crew to mess with this time, and it is clear as day that Ms. Bounds is not going to be put off....the ramblings of an anonymous "concerned student" not withstanding.

I don't recall GLSEN being behind any of the media reports on this. But hey, I'll defer to you on gay issues in the Twin Cities. Seems to be your specialty for some reason.
Also, I think Ms. Bounds is the one messing with folks, not the other way around. There is nothing in Minnesota law stating that a teacher can't be openly gay in the classroom. If Bounds doesn't like it, she can transfer her child to another school, or shell out a few bucks for private school.

"The wrong crew to mess with"? What are you gonna rumble in the playground. Grow up. Bullying people who aren't like you is SOOO 2nd Grade. Just not 2nd Grade at IDDS.
