Wisconsin Continues to Battle Anti-Gay Amendment
Fair-minded Wisconsinites are still battling the anti-gay amendment that was passed there last November.
State Sen. Jon Erpenbach has authored a proposed amendment that would ban discrimination against gays and lesbians with the hope that it will negate the civil union and domestic partnership language in the current constitutional amendment.
The text of the amendment reads: "all persons are guaranteed equal protection of the laws and no law shall discriminate on the basis of sex, gender, race, color, sexual orientation, disability, religion, national origin, marital status, family status, age or ancestry."
By banning discrimination, Erpenbach hopes that the amendment will afford soem rights for same-sex couples.
In Madison, the city council is considering adding an option to allow officials taking the oath of office to sign a statement opposing the anti-gay amendment.
Council member Mike Verveer, who is gay and running unopposed for re-election, said the plan "will help remove the cloud that would be hanging over our swearing-in ceremony and restore what should be a very celebratory day for all of us."
The hope is that it will encourage other cities in the state to do the same. It's good to see the fight in Wisconsin is not over.
