Corporations Court Gays, Pioneering Social Worker Passes Away

The Pioneer Press looks at corporations actively recruiting LGBT workers. "When he was preparing for his job hunt last year, Luciano PatiƱo, 28, who is gay, spoke up about what he was looking for. In his job search, he specifically told placement officials at the Carlson School of Management he was looking for a company with an open culture where he could be himself. He wanted a company that was open to diversity in ethnicity and lifestyle. "I don't want to advertise I'm gay," he said, "but I wanted to work at a place where, if it came up, it was not a big deal."

A cutting edge therapist that launched LGBT-friendly counseling services at Minneapolis' Family & Children's Service passed away two weeks ago. "Minna Shapiro of Minneapolis, an innovative social worker in the Twin Cities, worked "on the cutting edge" to help Minnesotans in need. Shapiro co-founded a program to help women out of prostitution. She was one of the first people to establish regular counseling services for the gay and lesbian community, and one of the first to engage in family therapy. Shapiro, 92, died on Sept. 10 in Minneapolis."

As Jeremy pointed out in the comments, the Pioneer Press comment section is quite rowdy with bigoted viewpoints over corporations creating a comfortable environment for LGBT folks. Typical ignorance. Here's a few examples:

"I'm sorry...but these people made a choice to deviate from the natural order of things. I don't believe that they should be treated poorly. I don't believe that when their loved one is in the hospital that they be denied the same privileges heterosexual couples are given. I don't believe that they should not enjoy protections under a "civil union" similar to what heterosexual couples enjoy under "marriage".

But I do believe that we should not pander to a group of individuals who have made a choice that is outside the natural order just because they have "buying power". So I guess if we conduct our businesses based on this way of thinking then we should be creating incentives for all the pedophiles out there too." [Ah the free-market sucks when it works against your prejudice - Andy]

"Why don't they recruit at the Airport bathroom???" [That one was offensive, but a little funny too - Andy]

Sure, lets do an end run around God's truth and see Him as an obstacle rather than a guide. Heck, why not pay gays MORE. The coddled class. Meanwhile, working Americans with families suffer. [And to these people, being fair in the hiring process means going against God. Heh. - Andy]

There's much more fun in the comments. Check it out.

I was hoping you'd mention the PiPress story. I tried to comment on it--twice--but for whatever reason my comments never showed up.

It kind of made me mad. I mean, all of those awful troglodytes who managed to slap the keyboard with their proto-limbs got their homophobic (or just stupid) word in, while my comment was ignored--or worse, rejected? :(
