Metro Transit and Lavender Ad
A new hire at Metro Transit says she doesn't want to drive the bus with a Lavender Magazine ad that says "Unleash Your Inner Gay," and early last week, Metro Transit agreed and allowed the bus driver to avoid driving any bus with the gay themed ad bacause of her religious convictions. The union that represents the driver, Amalgamated Transit Unit Local 1005, disagreed with the decision and urged Metro Transit not to allow the driver to avoid the 25 busses that carry the ad. None of the press accounts stated the religion of the driver.
On Friday, Metro Transit reversed its decision and said they would not allow anyone to avoid driving a bus that has ads that they object to. Metro Transit also expressed regret that their previous action may have been contrued as intolerance.
Joe Soucheray, a conservative columnist for the Pioneer Press says these religious accomodations are getting out of hand regardless of what your beliefs are:
The other day, to show you how fast things can get out of hand, it was reported in Minneapolis that a bus driver for Metro Transit was accommodated in her request to not drive a bus that carries ads for gay-themed Lavender Magazine. The employee was an unidentified female. Maybe she is a Muslim. Maybe she is a Baptist. I have no idea. For sure she is a Crackpotist.

Okay... I'm gay and at first I was a little miffed about this. But, if I drove a bus that had a religious-right ad on it, I'd feel uncomfortable. I don't know where you draw the line, but what I'm saying is, I can see where she's coming from.
On a separate note, can I just say that the Lavender campaign is the most random and bizarrely inappropriate thing I can imagine. You don't use a word like "unleash..." That's kind of creepy. I mean, what does that even mean? Unlease your inner gay? What? Is it like a demon or something inside of me? I just think it's a very strange slogan that really has nothing to do with the magazine. To me, the word unleash is aggressive and violent... Just my thoughts...
