What Ever Happened to Trikkx?
The gays are saving Downtown St. Paul nightlife... at least a little. The Pioneer Press looks at why the place is so damn boring, and talks to Camp [who are sponsoring the Minnesota GLBT Soccer fundraiser on Jan. 26th, mark your calendars!]
"We try to be what people expect from the downtown experience," said Bill Collins, owner of the newest nightclub, Camp - a gay venue that is the first downtown spot in a while where patrons can go dancing."(In the suburbs) you're certainly not going to get a black drag queen," he adds.
That drag queen is Tinea, and she doesn't lip-sync like the others. She is a real performer. Catch her on Fridays at Camp during the happy hour.
The article also gives some insight into why Trikkx had to close and how Camp remains open.
The old Trikkx Nightclub - in the Rossmor building, where Camp now sits - had pipes running from its bar into the apartments upstairs, leading to a bitter battle between residents and the bar's owner. Collins, of Camp, noted that "people on the fourth or fifth floor said their shelves were shaking," and has since added insulation.
