Community Congrats: Awards and GSAs
Congratulations!
Research on LGBT aging earned a local researcher an award last weekend. "Senior Associate Dean Jean Quam recently received the Generations of Love and Service Award for her research on GLBT aging. The award was presented on January 25 at the 2008 GLBT Aging Policy Summit in Minneapolis. The event was sponsored by GLBT Generations and OutFront Minnesota. In addition, Kelly Knochel, a doctoral student in the School of Social Work, presented on their joint research on MAAA planning and providing services for GLBT individuals as they age."
Twin Cities Pride has picked it's Pride Marshall as well as announced the other honors they bestow each year. "Twin Cities Pride is pleased to announce that at its January 7 meeting of the Board of Directors, the following nominees were selected as our 2008 Grand Marshal and Award Recipients: Grand Marshal, Dr. Matthew Stark; Corporate Achievement Award, Supervalu; Community Pride Award, Minnesota GLBTA Campus Alliance; Everyday Hero Award, Adam Robbins."
The school board of Proctor, Minn., a suburb of Duluth, announced the formation of a gay-straight alliance in that district. Interestingly, the Proctor High School drama club will also be performing the Wizard of Oz this spring. Coincidence? I think not. "A Gay Straight Alliance group has been formed at the high school at the request of students (MN Statute § 363.12). It will provide a forum to further a school culture of respect and understanding. Max Gonzales, PHS senior, explained a diversity and equity program (see Item VIII.D.) that will heighten awareness of cultural diversity and sensitivity. Projects will include all grade levels and schools and will be broadened to include Gay Straight Alliance."
