Prince slams gays, gay marriage

| | Comments (6)
prince.jpgPrince, the slightly irrelevant 1980s Minneapolis pop star, says God killed gays back in biblical times. And seems to think it was a good idea. From the New Yorker:
"So here’s how it is: you’ve got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this.” He pointed to a Bible. “But there’s the problem of interpretation, and you’ve got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn’t. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got blue, you’ve got the Democrats, and they’re, like, ‘You can do whatever you want.’ Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right.”

When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’ ”

With his flashy purple and gold clothes and effeminate style, one would think Prince would have a little bit more empathy with the gay community. After all, he's been stereotyped as gay by many. I guess this is what brainwashing by Jehovah's Witnesses will do to you...

I think it is a stretch to say my comment about the JWs is bigoted. Bigotry specifically refers to use of religion to demonize and demoralize another group.

Jehovah's Witnesses are extremely anti-gay rights. I don't see anybody actively trying to oppress JWs the way JWs oppress gays.

Now if I had written a similar statement to Prince's (and the doctrine of JW) "God would have made the right decision if he'd have killed all Jehovah's Witnesses," then I could see an accusation of bigotry.

Of course, I would never say that, because I'm not a believer..And if I was, I would not put my faith in a religion that thinks mass murder committed by my God was a good thing.

So the test is your vision? Or your special definition of bigotry? Is there some reason that you couldn't simply that that you think that the JWs are wrong on GLBT issues? Or is it necessary that a group that is, in your opinion (and, for that matter, mine) wrong on an issue be demonized as "brainwashing" their adherents?

Andy said:

Brainwashing is an umbrella term to indicate the JWs well-documented coercion, demands for conformity among members, the ostracizing of members who leave the movement (family members are asked to reject other family members), and punishment for insiders who provide different viewpoints.

Those are cult-like behaviors, behaviors that strip free will. Or, brainwashing.

It's not a special definition of bigotry for me to characterize the movement in such a manner. Their anti-gay views are one of the aspects of the movement that they exert with absolute authoritarian control.

The description fits, and I stand by it.

The big difference between Jehovah's Witnesses and Christians is that the Watchtower Society's central core creed proclaims Jesus second coming in October 1914.
They sometimes try to obscure this failed prophecy, and say that he came 'invisibly'.Yes,all other Christains are awaiting Jesus return, the JW say he ALREADY came back in 1914 and is only working through their Watchtower society.

Jehovah's Witnesses have lost membership in all countries with major internet access because their false doctrines and harmful practices are exposed on the modern information superhighway.
The Watchtower is a truly Orwellian world.
